When Iran tries to blame nuclear sabotage on the US, Mitch Rapp comes up with an ingenious plan to turn the tables on the mullah state. But when CIA Director Irene Kennedy’s back-channel meeting with an Iranian spy chief goes awry, Rapp must pull out all the stops to save her.In the series arc, Rapp’s failure to suffer fools gladly - those who don’t understand the terror war’s bare-knuckle rules - is taking its toll on his relations with colleagues including Kennedy.His mood has darkened since the murder of his wife by an assassin gunning for Rapp. (Someone a lot like himself, but not working for the good guys.) The darkness is lifted some by his fling with former Secret Service agent Maria Rivera, who joins him to hunt a key figure in a previous plot against presidential candidates. And Kennedy, by the end, is on board - for understandable reasons - with Rapp’s hardball tactics. But Rapp can barely hold his tongue around anyone besides Kennedy or the president himself.I particularly liked an undercover Mossad agent’s sabotage of the Iranian nuclear plant where he works undercover. It was both plausible and audacious. I only found one real inconsistency. The agent, an Iranian-born Israeli who slips into the country, is covered as an older Iranian man who lost his family in an American bombing and gets hired at the plant as a janitor through a relative’s connections. So how does a foreign agent sneak into the country and get this job? Is there really a relative in the bureaucracy who’s in on the whole thing? If not, how the heck does a foreigner with a fabricated identity get that kind of job?I also liked the opening sequence of Rapp’s revenge hit. It, like the Mossad agent’s sabotage has a certain devastating and ingenious simplicity enacted by one bold and well-prepared man flying solo.I love Irene Kennedy. (In the film she would be played by a younger Kathleen Turner.) She’s a stand-up guy, not only having Rapp’s controversial back since forever, but, as she proved in the last book, willing to get her hands dirty when the situation requires it. And here she holds together under the worst kind of treatment.She is bolstered emotionally at one point by her knowledge that Rapp is after her captors. She, and we, pity the fools. What a great read! Mitch Rapp is truly a great hero - James Bond, John Rambo, Jason Bourne and a Marvel superhero (take your pick) all rolled into one! Of course it's a fantastic story but one never really knows. A woman CIA director getting kidnapped, let alone in the middle east, is not something that could really happen in real life but then, who knows? That is the premise of this book and it's quite compelling. Mitch Rapp is always there to provide drama and great suspense. He gets his man in the end but boy, what a joy to read.The late Vince Flynn was a great story writer, especially this genre of CIA inspired novels. I have read all his novels except one and to be honest, it's very difficult to read other writers who try to imitate his style because they can't do it. Flynn had a certain way of putting you in the middle of the action and immersing you in it. If you have watched one of the Bourne movies, it reads just like that. As you are reading the book, it unfolds like a movie. I read the book literally in one night. Stayed up until the "movie" was over.
